There I was about to turn 40 and arranged nothing, earache and a good kick up the backside from my girlfriend made me have a good think. Being into black music myself and all my friends etc being into mainstream charty music, I had my job cut out finding somewhere I would enjoy and keeping them happy aswell. Having only been to Funkademia once before when they were in The Attic nightspot many years earlier, I could not really remember the music policy. With it being in a mainly student area way back then I came round to thinking it would be a soul/funk night aimed more at the student market, so a gamble it was.
Nobody was overjoyed at the idea, but as it was my birthday they were willing to give it a go. I contacted funkademia via their website regarding a guest list, within a day or so they got back to me and it was arranged. My party would all queue jump and gain entry for half normal door price, well as long as we were in before 11pm as i was told it is normally full to capacity by 11.30pm.
Well Saturday arrived and at 10.40pm I rounded the party up and headed off to One central Street. Up on arrival to the club there was a queue about half way down the street, I went to the door with my party of 20 and presented my paperwork. Not a problem what so ever, we were filtered straight through the till @ half price with no fuss at all, so far so good.
Once inside everyone was pleased I had taken them too some grotty back street club that had seen better days. It was a nice size and pleasantly fitted out, 2 bars which were well staffed, adequate seating, plenty of dance area & communal toilets which was a novelty in itself to some. Musically i noticed was abit more way out for your charty/pop type but as the night progressed the music was anything from The Jackson's to The Jackson Sisters. There was a commercial element and an underground touch aswell, it was put together in such a way that it kept everyone happy.
All 20 of my party enjoyed the night more than they imagined and that is why Funkademia has been going so long, They have got a music policy that you wont find anywhere else in Manchester or beyond ......... and it WORKS!
Funkademia have now got themselves a nice venue and lets hope I am writing another review for them on my 50th birthday.

SOULJUICE GIVES FUNKADEMIA THEIR SEAL OF APPROVAL ........ 10 out of 10 KEEP IT GOING!
